13 May 2007 Ali Said Jamaleddine, a senior in Electrical
Engineering, was the recipient of this year's President's Award for Student Excellence. The award
was announced at the AUD 2007-2008 Annual Gala Dinner, which was held on May 12 at the Johara Ballroom
of Madinat Jumeirah. "The School of Engineering is proud to have one of its finest graduating
seniors receive the President's Award for a second year in a row," said Dr. Alaa Ashmawy,
Dean of the School of Engineering. Last year's President's Award went to Bashar Al-Rawi, now a graduate
student in Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The President’s Award
for Student Excellence, the university’s highest student honor, recognizes student excellence at
AUD through academics, leadership, participation and involvement in academic and extra-curricular
activities at AUD, thus emulating the values of the University. AUD's President Lance de Masi described
Ali Jamaleddine as a “real star whose performance has every base covered”.
The Civil Engineering Students Association (CESA) was dubbed the "Best
Student Organization" for its ongoing visible presence on campus. CESA organized a large number
of academic and non-academic events throughout the year, and was cited for its highly visible member
involvement on campus. Dr. Elias Saqan, faculty advisor to CESA indicated he was proud of the students
achievement, especially given the recency of its founding. CESA was launched in the fall of 2007 by
a small number of civil engineering students lead by senior Samir El-Saka. It has since witnessed a
dramatic increase in membership and activities.
Other Engineering students honored at the Gala Dinner are Tariq Khwaja,
recognized with the "Student Leadership Award" for his efforts as the founding editor of
the School of Engineering newsletter. Samir El-Saka and Shiva Nabaei, both Civil Engineering seniors,
were co-recipients of the "Student Service Award" in recognition of their role in founding
CESA. Electrical and Computer Engineering students Amir Ali Rajaei, Hamed Alizadeh Pasdar, and
Shreya Dungarwal, whose senior design project earned first place among all UAE students at the IEEE
Student Day, were recognized with the "AUD Ambassador Award".
