Toward a Sustainable Environment

The School of Engineering offers a Sustainable Engineering Design course (ECVL 440) as part of the Civil Engineering curriculum. The course offers students the option of sitting in for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate (GA) examination. As a result nine AUD Civil Engineering students recently passed the course with LEED GA certification.

The course prepares students well to succeed in the exams. Commenting on this Dr. Hosni Ghedira, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, stated, “ECVL 440 used a combination of interactive case-based teaching, formal lectures, and sample exams.” Interactive learning included meeting leading industry professionals such as Mr. Jourdan Younis, Manager Sustainability in Oger International Office in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Commenting on the need for LEED certified professional Mr. Younis said, “… there is such an acute shortage of talented LEED engineers entering the post-degree market …”. He examined reports submitted by students as part of their coursework and found the “students’ work to be of a high caliber and not so dissimilar in scope from the report issued by our third party consultant.” He was grateful on behalf of Oger International’s office in Abu Dhabi to have the opportunity to interact with AUD Engineering students.

The course is aimed at aligning students with the move towards sustainable development in engineering. Manal Kaakani, who passed her LEED GA exam during the course stated that “Going Green” is the new world trend and it is great that AUD’s School of Engineering provides the students with the opportunity to obtain LEED GA title, before the stepping into the real world.” Another successful LEED GA, Yaman Bdaiwi, stated that “Abu Dhabi municipality is working on establishing a new sustainability rating system called “Estidama” which is almost similar to LEED but specifically designed for UAE, and therefore having the LEED AP certification will help in understanding the new UAE rating system once it is developed.
The LEED GA certification is another feather in the cap of graduating Civil Engineers. Dr. Ghedira remarked, “Students are excited to put the green edge on their resume!! Their interaction with professionals during the class and their practical involvement in a real LEED Project have provided them with the necessary exposure to be eligible for the LEED Accredited Professional (AP) examination.”
