AUD Shortlisted in Solar Decathlon Middle East


The American University in Dubai was proud to be standing among the shortlisted teams announced to continue in the Solar Decathlon Middle East yesterday for their project "Jeel" in a ceremony taking place during the World Green Economy Summit (WGES), the leading forum in the world of green economy, which took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Twenty two teams among a host of international submissions from universities around the world including Austria, USA, Finland, France, UAE, Spain, and Taiwan were chosen to move forward based on their initial proposals in the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) - an international competition created through an agreement signed between Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) in which universities from all over the world meet to design, build and operate a grid-connected, energetically self-sufficient livable solar house to be exhibited and evaluated in Dubai in 2018.
 
The multi-discipline team from AUD includes students studying civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering as well as architecture, interior design and visual communications who studied to create the proposal and will now design, and execute a sustainable house within the constraints set by SDME.
 
The team was led and mentored by faculty and industry professionals, mainly Dr. Alaa Ashmawy, Dean - School of Engineering and Principal Funder; Dr. Peiman Kianmehr, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Faculty Advisor, Principal Investigator and Prime Recipient; M. Khalifeh, Project Manager; M. Diab, Team Leader, Y. Al Hamdan, Construction Manager; and A. Morkos, Contest Captain.

The AUD project proposal focused on the fact that Electricity Generation from solar energy is key to a sustainable and resourceful future for the generations to come. The name of the project "Jeel" means generation in Arabic, was selected to reflect this message. Jeel employs affordable, resource-efficient, and both user and eco-friendly technologies in constructing a solar-powered net-zero residential unit. Jeel is a 75 m2, one story, and one bedroom (plus one deformable room) sustainable house to address relevant conventional, modern, and innovative building elements to accommodate a group of two to three visiting professionals in Dubai's arid climate.
 
The temporary residents of Jeel will be exposed to several creatively embedded cultural and historical values of the UAE. Housing demand for the Dubai Expo 2020 with its multidisciplinary, extensive, and iconic features was identified as a great occasion to promote the concept of sustainable solar powered houses and present it to the right audiences. Jeel is therefore primarily designed and constructed to provide model workplace plus residence for the Expo 2020 attendees especially for accommodating educated professionals traveling to the region for future expositions and exhibitions.
 
In 2018, Jeel will be set in DEWA's designated land called Hai for comprehensive performance evaluation. The great living experience provided by Jeel, together with the ever increasing interest in innovative and eco-friendly technologies are anticipated to raise the visibility and popularity of such net-zero building units. The tackling of climate-related distinctive challenges will improve the credibility of practical sustainable solar houses as a key requirement for their mass-production locally or around the globe in near future.
